How to Hire a Nanny

Making the decision to hire a nanny can be a mind-boggling experience. You think of so many things that could go wrong, yet you know that there is no alternative. You need to work for your family, and you can’t afford not to have both parents working. Admitting to yourself and your family that you need someone else to take over while you go out and make money is not something to be ashamed of.

While most parents would prefer to stay at home so that they can take care of their kids, some need another pair of hands to help them out. But this doesn’t mean you have no control over what happens at home with a nanny there. In fact, the first step to hiring a nanny is totally in your control. You get to choose which nanny to hire.

More and more people are turning to nanny agencies to find the perfect nanny for them. Now, we use the term ‘perfect’ here as a benchmark, but what we really mean is someone who can do a good job.

The criterion for selecting a nanny is different for every working parent. Some prefer a nanny who is strict and firm with rules. Some prefer the nanny to be childlike and energetic. There are some parents who prefer teenagers to take care of their kids, while some parents prefer a much older woman to take on this responsibility.

Whatever your selection criteria, there is someone out there who fits the bill. And, one of the easiest ways to find that person is to search online or contact a local nanny agency. If you avail of nanny services through an intermediary (the agency), you’re at least secure in the knowledge that these nannies have been screened in a way before they got included in the pool of potential employees.

But again, you can’t be completely sure, so you have to do your own research. Look for sites online that lets you perform background checks. Just a simple search will do. If you want a more in-depth one, there are also services that offer more thorough investigation.

Why go through all this trouble just to screen a nanny? For most parents, the answer is simple. They don’t want to leave their children with just any person. They want to make sure a good person is staying with their kids while they’re away.

If you find a few potential nannies, insist on a face-to-face interview before you hire. Some agencies online simply give you a number to call, but the best ones arrange face-to-face interviews. There are a lot of things that you could observe during an interview that will tell of a person’s true character. Some people call it ‘vibe’. If you don’t feel comfortable with a person, there’s a chance that your kids wouldn’t feel comfortable having her around too.

When you’ve tried everything to check your new nanny’s background, it’s time to go with your gut feeling. Not everything on paper could make you like a person. You need to observe the way she interacts with your kids too. For this you might want to install a nanny camera, which is a discreet way of making sure you chose your nanny well.
